The Winchester Mystery House is a mansion in California which was once the personal residence of Sarah Winchester.
She was born in 1839, & her original name was Sarah Pardee until she got married in 1862, to William Winchester, who was the heir of the Winchester Repeating Arms Company. The company had developed the repeating rifle, a gun that was easy to reload & fire rapidly, at a rate of one shot every three seconds. This gun was actually used by Northern troops during the Civil War and was also known as "the gun that won the West"
Sarah & William started a family in 1866, but there daughter Annie sadly died in infancy, this destroyed Sarah mentally, she couldn't handle life after the death of her baby daughter, 15 years later Mr Winchester died of tuberculosis, after this loss, it took sarah off the edge totally, she was so lost in her life, that she went to see a medium, the medium told Sarah Winchester, "Your Winchester family had been struck by a curse placed upon you all, You are haunted by the ghosts of all those killed by the Winchester rifle. These spirits are seeking revenge, and the only way you can appease them is to build a house for them. The ghosts also have one other request & that is this house must never be completed. you can never stop building, if you stop you will die too.
Sarah had inherited $20 million and just less than half of the Winchester Repeating Arms Company stock, she headed west to build a home for herself and the ghosts that haunt her. She bought a six room farmhouse on 162 acres in California, Sarah became absolutely obsessed for 38 years, she had construction going 7 days a week, 24 hours a day at her home, The house is filled with lots of corridors, bell towers, weird things like stairs that lead right to up to ceilings & doors that open up to walls.
Mrs Winchester served as her own architect, some believe the ghosts told Sarah what she must build. every night Sarah would go in to her séance room and ask the spirits if they liked the progress of the house & what she must do next, they would whisper back to her, Sarah would draw sketches of what to build next. The very next morning, Sarah would present her construction workers with hand drawn sketches of what was to be done next.
A lot of what she drew just didn't make sense to the construction workers, but they done what ever she said, as she paid very well, if she made mistakes, she either had it destroyed or told the workers to just continue building over it, workers felt uncomfortable at times, reportedly hearing strange voices & cry's.
Some people think all the mistakes Sarah designed, were designed to confuse the evil spirits that were haunting Sarah. She may have believed that the ghosts would get lost on stairs that went no where or accidentally step out of a door that went outside.
In 1906 there was a earthquake in San Francisco & Sarah was trapped inside one of the rooms screaming out for help, which was called the Daisy room, she believed that the ghosts were going to get her during the earthquake & that the earthquake was a sign from the spirits that they were angry that she might finish construction on the house soon, by the end of 1906 the house had became so large that the top three floors collapsed during the earthquake.
For some strange reason, Sarah was obsessed with the number 13, she had to have 13 of everything in the house, 13 window panes, 13 coat hooks, 13 steps on each staircase, 13 bathrooms, 13 sinks literally 13 of everything.
