Mining begin in the Columbus Salt Marsh around 1863 and by 1865 two men by the name of Samuel Young and A.J. Holmes built a quartz mill for the purpose of processing gold and silver from the nearby mining town of Candelaria. That same year a 100 miners moved into the area because Columbus was an abundant water source since it was scare in SW Nevada. By the 1870's Borax had been discovered which is a prime ingredient in many soaps, detergents, cleaners and enamels. Some say Francis Smith the borax king in death valley made this discovery others say it was William Troup a miner from the Comstock Lode of Virginia City. Nobody knows for sure but four more Borax Mills sprung up and by 1875 Columbus had a 1000 residents. The town had its own post office, iron foundry, businesses, school, saloons, hotels, stores, homes, butcher shop, cemetery and even a newspaper. When the Pacific Coast Borax Company was relocated along with others that moved on the town by the mid 1800's dwindled to a 100 residents and eventually by 1899 the post office closed and several revivals have failed. I will take you into an eerie snowstorm with little to no visibility as we explore mills, miner cabins, snow covered stone ruins and even a cemetery riddled with wooden crosses. Not much remains of Columbus but this salt marsh was the site of some of the largest borax production in the country in its hey day and today borax is still being mined here found in daily household products still used today. We are the storm troopers of the salt marsh in sub zero temperatures, snow falling, winds howling and a vast expanse that hides its secrets well! Do you dare enter the white with us as we take on this forgotten ghost town?
