The Crystal Basin was formed by many active volcanoes millions of years ago. Eventually during the last ice age glaciers carved out its basins leaving behind over 100 lakes in what today is part of the Desolation Wilderness in the Eldorado National Forest. At one time the Maidu, Miwoks and Washo traded with one another as they peacefully thrived in this basin which is over 64,000 acres of rugged wilderness. Eventually when the Europeans arrived they used this basin for dairy cattle to grave in its high meadows. Eventually many of those meadows were turned into reservoirs and the dams were used to create hydro electricity for the city of Sacramento. Today this basin contains many historical sites, streams, lakes, rivers and is home to the famous Rubicon Trail. Our journey will take us through the heart of the Crystal Basin all the way to Loon Lake one of the most prestigious bodies of water found in the region which is overshadowed by Devils Peak the very beast we would conquer.
